After Stadium Roof Collapse, Wanita MCA Chairman Urges Government to Create Bureau in Charge of Ensuring Safety of Future Construction Projects

Press statement issued by Wanita MCA chief Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun in response to the roof collapse of Stadium Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin , Kuala Terengganu

Wanita MCA National Chairman YB Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun expresses her shock at yesterday’s events, the collapse of the roof of Stadium Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin in Kuala Terengganu, which was completed last year at the cost of RM 270 million which later shot up to RM 300 million. She urges the government to take quick and decisive actions in bringing forth those responsible for this incident, whether it be corporations, individuals, or other groups.

“The Terengganu Stadium collapse incident not only places the lives of our citizens in danger, it has greatly damaged the public image of our government. Therefore, the companies responsible for this debacle should be blacklisted. At the same time, the officials who prove responsible for the project should take responsibility and resign. Furthermore, the professional licenses of these companies involved should be summarily revoked,” Mei Fun said.

On the morning of Tuesday, 2 June 09 around 8.00 a.m., the roof of the newly constructed Terengganu Stadium suddenly collapsed. Fortunately, there was nobody nearby, and it resulted in no injuries. The stadium was built in June of last year, with a variety of facilities, including a soccer field. The roof that collapsed was on the right side of the complex.

Mei Fun also expressed her belief that the government needs to assemble a committee to investigate in this case and ensure the safety of future constructions, to prevent the future occurrence of an event such as the Terengganu stadium roof collapse.

Finally, Mei Fun urged the government to punish those responsible for the Terengganu stadium collapse, and in doing so, avoid the potential future loss of both money, as well as human lives.
