LAUNCH OF NATIONAL ONE CHILD, ONE HOPE EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME

OPENING REMARKS
YB DATIN PADUKA CHEW MEI FUN

DEPUTY MINISTER FOR WOMEN, FAMILY AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

(pic: CFL)

First and foremost, allow me to take this opportunity to thank Smart Reader® Worldwide Sdn. Bhd. for inviting me to launch this National One Child One Hope Education Scholarship Programme. I am very happy to be here today as this scholarship programme will enable underprivileged children equal opportunity to obtain quality education. In a way, this programme offers a golden opportunity, even a chance of a lifetime. Therefore, I would like to commend the initiative taken by Smart Reader® Worldwide by way of extending their helping hand to the underprivileged children in fulfilling their corporate social responsibility (CSR).

It is gratifying to note that today’s programme also has invited 80 children from various homes to celebrate Chinese New Year. I am sure the children will enjoy and remember this celebration.

Ladies and gentlemen,

It is undeniable that early childhood education has profound impact on the development of children. Numerous studies have shown that children’s success and achievements are determined by how well we have prepared them from childhood. Indeed, the World Bank Report 2006 has showed that programme which promotes growth and development of young children from the age of 0 to 6 years are the best investments for developing the human capital necessary for the economic growth of a nation. More importantly, every child has the right to education especially a quality education regardless of their background and economic status.

Recognising the role and importance of early childhood education, the government plans to increase the number of children in pre-school education from the current 76% to 87% by 2013 under the National Key Results Areas (NKRA). Further, the Government Transformation Programme (GTP) roadmap has promised to improve student outcomes across the school system and to enhance access to quality education for all students. In the Budget 2010, the government has pledged RM100 million to the Permata programme as a recognition of the importance of early childhood education for children under the age of 4 in Malaysia.

Ladies and gentlemen,

Money spent in education is not consumption, but rather a worthy investment. In this regard, I would like to encourage individuals and organisations to find out more about this scholarship programme and see in what way you can contribute to this noble cause. It is my fervent hope that other corporations and organisations will emulate the example set by Smart Reader® Worldwide. And I especially think credit is due to Dr. K. H. Wang, who selflessly gave back her prize money of RM11,000 to start the ball rolling for the funds of the National One Child One Hope Education Scholarship Programme. I understand that this amount was part cash and prizes awarded by SME Corp when Dr. Wang was declared the National Women Entrepreneur 2009. In view of this, I would like to encourage more women to explore entrepreneurship as entrepreneurship provides an opportunity for women to generate income and improve their financial status. Thus, the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development under the National Key Result Areas (NKRA) aims to train 4,000 women entrepreneurs by 2012.

On that note, I hereby officially launch the National One Child, One Hope Education Scholarship Programme.

Thank you and Gong Xi Fa Cai to everyone.

African kids dazzle with Qi Gong skills

Pic by CFL

The Star News : Friday December 11, 2009

THEY came from a faraway country where famine and HIV/AIDS are rampant and the journey to the airport alone took them almost two hours of being crammed into a truck.

Despite their tender age, many of them had tasted the worst kind of suffering and a few could have died of starvation if they had not been rescued from the streets.

But when they performed to a full capacity crowd at the Petaling Jaya Civic Hall recently for the Spread The Seeds Of Love charity concert, the 30 African children from the Amitofo Care Centre (ACC) in Malawi showed the sweetest and brightest of smiles that radiated innocence, thanksgiving and unwavering inner strength.

Sing out lout: Their African heritage is not forgotten even though they are raised by a Buddhist organisation (pic by Star)

They were the young charges of Ven Hui Li, a Taiwanese monk who vowed to devote five lifetimes to develop and propagate Buddhism in Africa.

The centre set up by him now looks after 300 orphans and children of single parents; it also helps other community-based organisations that support more than 2,000 children and 1,500 adults.

The charity concert will also be organised in various other parts of Malaysia as well as Brunei and is aimed at raising funds for the building of a high school for these children.

Cultural integration: The children got the audience singing and tapping to the music when they donned Chinese costumes to sing Chinese songs.(pic by Star)

The concert was presented with the help of Persatuan Anak-anak Yatim Eduwis Selangor, NSS Centre and MBA & Sports Sdn Bhd.

“Why bring the children this far? Because we have been waiting sorely in Africa for too long for people to come to us but to no avail, so we have to come out,” Ven Hui Li said with a smile.

“We hope to awaken the love in everyone to care for the children, there are just too many orphaned children in Africa waiting for help.”

He added that imparting Chinese culture and knowledge to the children at the centre, while retaining their own African heritage, was an effort to achieve the vision of One World, One Humanity that could eventually bring world peace.

Deputy Women, Family and Community Minister Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun launched the concert.

Also present at the concert were Chief High Priest of Malaysia Ven. K Sri Dhammaratana, MBA & Sports Sdn Bhd chairman Michael Lee and NSS president Hurricane Hwang.

The children wowed the crowd with their mastery of kung fu, that included Qi Gong demonstrations where they cracked iron bars with their heads and sucked bowls to their stomachs.

They are taught kung fu at the centre to boost health, as well as to protect themselves in a society where the crime rate is high.

Their rendition of Mandarin, Cantonese, Hokkien, Hakka, African and English songs had the audience singing and tapping to the rhythm while the theme song, One World One Humanity, brought the show to a heart-warming finale.

(pic : CFL)

Private funding a great help for charitable bodies, says Chew

The Star News Monday July 6, 2009

JOHOR BARU: Charitable bodies need donations from private organisations to sustain their operations as funds provided by the Government are not sufficient, said Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun.

“The grants given by the Government are definitely not enough and voluntary bodies have to use their own means to increase their funding.

“This is where private organisations can come in by hosting charitable activities to collect funds for them,” she said.

She said a total of RM7.5mil grants were given to 117 charitable bodies last year.

“However, that amount is only enough for their food bill, so funding from the private sector is very important.

“The target groups are children’s homes, old folks and the disabled,” Chew said at the launch of the Fifth Annual Charity Run organised by IOI Properties Bhd Johor Baru division, IOI Mall Bandar Putra Kulaijaya and Kulai MCA Youth here yesterday.

Chew also urged the public to be more sensitive when it comes to the needs of the disabled.

“Every now and then we can see parking spaces that are reserved for the disabled being used by able-bodied drivers.

“This clearly shows disrespect and intolerance toward this group of people,” she said, adding that the disabled also had their rights.

IOI Properties Bhd senior general manager Simon Heng said that the charity run had been well-received.

“I am pleased that this year there are about 1,500 participants compared to last year’s 1,200,” Heng said.

He added that the group hoped to raise RM20,000 for disabled children from Persatuan Penjagaan Kanak-Kanak Terencat Akal in Johor Baru.

Centre to continue dialysis treatment for the poor

PETALING JAYA: The Ping Rong-NKF Haemodialysis Centre will continue to provide treatment for the underprivileged even with the current economic downturn, said Wanita MCA chief Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun.

“The centre will go on trying its best to source for funds to provide quality haemodialysis care for poor patients,” she said after presenting ang pows at the centre.

It costs the centre RM200,000 a year to provide treatment for the poor and underprivileged.
Chew and her mother, Cheng Ah Looi, were at the centre, handing out ang pows to 36 patients and staff. Also present was National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia (NKF) CEO Wayne Woo.
The centre, which started operations in January 2004, has room for more patients, said Chew.
“There are currently 36 patients seeking treatment at the centre. We can accommodate another 24 patients.

“There is a special committee on NKF to ensure only deserving patients receive treatment from the centre,” she said.

Patients only need to pay RM50 per treatment at the centre. The balance of RM100 is paid by the Health Ministry and NKF.

Chew said the centre not only provide haemodialysis treatment but also trained nurses from private nursing colleges.

“Graduate nurses would train at NKF centres for six months to gain experience before being employed by the centres,” she said, adding that 70 nurses have been trained in 23 centres nationwide since the programme started in July last year.

MCA relief squad helping single parents earn more

KUALA LUMPUR: The MCA’s Crisis Relief Squad is helping 100 single-parent families to increase their incomes by selling health products.

“This is to help low-income single parents become more self-dependent,” said Wanita MCA chief Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun.

The project was open to single parents whose income was below RM1,200 (with one child), below RM1,500 (two children) and below RM1,800 (three children).

“If they achieve RM2,000 or more in sales, they will be given a best-seller award,” Chew said.
The top award comes with a RM888 prize while the second and third place winners will receive RM688 and RM388 respectively.
