Wanita MCA: outraged by privacy invasion of Bkt Lanjan ADUN - measures needed to protect women

16 February 2009
Press statement issued by the Wanita MCA National Chairman, Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun

RE: Nude Pictures of Bukit Lanjan State Assembly Woman YB Elizabeth Wong
Wanita MCA empathizes with Bukit Lanjan state assemblywoman Elizabeth Wong surrounding her private life according to the latest reports. We are outraged by such shameful acts of using women as sexual objects. It is an outright invasion of the privacy of women as well as an exploitation of women.

We condemn the actions, firstly because the taking of photographs of bodily parts without their consent or knowledge is against the law and punishable under the Penal Code (Act 574).

Secondly, posting of such pornographic materials in the public also constitutes a violation under the same Act. Thirdly, any member of the public who circulates, distributes or passes on such photographs should also be condemned as this is tantamount to propagating pornography, which is also illegal under the Malaysian law.

We would like to advise all women to be cautious. We also urge the government to strictly enforce implementation of the Act which provides for punitive measures so that it becomes a real deterrent against such detestable behavior.

We want the government to conduct awareness campaigns to promote respect for women, women’s human rights as well as non-violation of women.
